HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Odessa High, Permian advance athletes to area meet

WOLFFORTH It was a busy two days for the Odessa High and Permian track teams at the District 2-6A Tracks and Field Championships Wednesday and Thursday at Tiger Stadium.

With most of the field events finished Wednesday, the focus of the second day was on the track and the Bronchos and Panthers didn’t disappoint.

Odessa High’s Ivan Carreon qualified for three individual events at the Area 1/2 Championships on April 21 at Ratilff Stadium.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to next week’s competition.

Carreon, a junior, will compete in the high jump, 110 High Hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.

He was the district champion in both hurdles events, while finishing fourth in the high jump.

Odessa High’s Paige Byford will compete in the high jump and 400 meters, along with being part of the Lady Bronchos 1,600-meter relay team.

Kylee Barletts led the Lady Panthers’ throwers, qualifying for both the discus and shot put events.

Permian’s Alivia Rivera-Norman won the girls 100-meter hurdles in 14.57 seconds, with teammate Jaiah George finishing second in 15.27.

George also qualified for the high jump.

Panthers’ freshman Davin Merrill won the Boys 800 in one minute, 57.02 seconds. Miguel Lujan of Odessa High (1:58.67) and William Zamorano of Permian (1:59.60) were third and fourth, respectively.

Odessa High’s De’Mareon Gray won the Boys Discus crown on Wednesday with a throw of 162 feet, nine inches to edge Permian’s Bryan Pry (160-7).
