Police identify 2 killed in shooting

OPD offers few details on Thursday deaths

Odessa Police Department officials offered little information Friday on the shooting deaths of two people on Thursday night and would not say if they are seeking a suspect.

The only information released was the names of the two people who died from gunshot injuries on Thursday evening. Phone calls to the OPD public relations manager we’re not answered but a text asking if there was a threat to anyone following the shooting was answered with “the press release with all the info we’re releasing is out.”

The pair was identified as 28-year-old Heather Leann Hernandez Rodriguez and 21-year-old Adan Barrientos Barrera Jr., a news release stated. The next of kin has been notified.

The shootings happened Thursday night as OPD officers responded to the 900 block of W. 40th Street following multiple 911 calls.

A neighbor in the area on Friday afternoon said they heard three shots fired from what sounded like a high-caliber pistol. The neighbor said about five minutes after the gunshots the police showed up.

Officers reportedly found two people dead from gunshot injuries.

Both bodies have been sent for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.

At this time OPD Detectives, Crime Scene Unit, and the Texas Rangers are conducting the investigation. Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Justin Baker confirmed over the phone with the Odessa American that Texas Rangers are investigating.
