Trooper says multiple fatalities as group on way to Sweetwater

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Justin Baker confirmed to the Odessa American over the phone Friday evening there were multiple fatalities in a collision involving an Andrews High School band bus that was on its way to a football game in Sweetwater.

Baker said that troopers were on scene investigating the crash. He also said that he will have more details later on.

As far as the fatalities, Baker said “we probably won’t release that for awhile until all the next of kin have been notified.”

The game was scheduled in Sweetwater on Friday night against Springtown. The game was cancelled but it was not clear as of press time when it would be rescheduled.

“Our administrators are there and working to serve the needs of our students and their families. We cannot confirm anything else at this time,” Andrews ISD Public Relations Coordinator Jessica McKernan said via text.

Baker, who is stationed in San Angelo, said that he was headed that way as of 5:42 p.m. Friday.

Some patients were air flighted to Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring.
