Technology leads to burglary arrest

A good eye for cars and technology led to the arrest Tuesday of a 22-year-old Odessa man on a burglary charge.

According to the Odessa Police Department, a French Avenue resident provided officers video surveillance from directly behind her house showing a dark colored hatchback or small SUV being parked directly behind her house around 7:45 a.m. April 18 and the driver walking toward her residence. Moments later, the camera captured the same man running back to his car carrying multiple items.

The woman reported tools and a Louis Vuitton bag had been stolen from her garage.

An officer realized the car was a red Pontiac Torrent and he found a red 2007 Pontiac Torrent with a particular license plate in the department’s Flock camera system. He also discovered automatic license plate readers from patrol units had seen the car near Highway 80, a few blocks from the burglary, repeatedly, the report stated.

The officer also discovered the car’s owner, Leonardo Ramos had been accused of stealing tools from people on Monday and when looking at the body camera footage of the officers in that case saw Ramos resembled the burglary suspect, the report stated.

According to the report, when the officer called Ramos and said he’d been seen stealing the items from the French Avenue garage, the 22-year-old said he still had the tools, but he’d given away the Louis Vuitton.

Ramos was booked into the Ector County jail on suspicion of burglary of a habitation, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. He remained in custody Wednesday night on surety bonds totaling $24,000.
