Traffic alert for FM 1788 starting Monday

The outside lanes will be closed on FM 1788 near the north airport entrance starting Monday morning as a project continues to improve a four-mile section of FM 1788 between Highway 191 and Business Interstate 20. FM 1788 is also known as Highway 349 in this area.
The outside lanes will be closed for the next several months for culvert work and road widening work, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation. Jones Brothers Dirt & Paving Contractors of Odessa won the project with a bid of $6.9 million.
The overall project will will add a continuous left turn lane to the section north of Loop 40 and rehabilitate and rebuild the entire stretch of road. The road has deteriorated in recent years thanks to heavy oilfield traffic, according to the release.
Access to businesses will be maintained as much as possible. Much of the project will have a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Some areas will have a speed limit of 50 miles per hour. A width restriction of 11 feet will be put in place for the project. The project is expected to be completed in early 2018.
