RODEO: 90th SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo crowns champions

The curtain came down on the 90th SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo Saturday with champions crowned in eight events.

Some of the winners competed earlier in the event, with one top spot changing hands during the final performance at the Ector County Coliseum.

That switch came in the saddle bronc event when Brody Cress, of Hillsdale, Wyo., rode Beutler & Son’s Red Wings to an 88-point score to earn the buckle.

That supplanted Jacobs Crawley of Stephenville, who scored 84 points earlier in the event.

Kade Sonnier of Carencro, La., won the bareback event aboard Boomerang with an 87-point ride, two points better than Chett Deitz of Milo, Alberta, Canada.

Shawn Bennett Jr. of Soper, Okla., is the bull riding champion with an 88.5-point ride on Overpass. Jess Askey of Athens was second at 87.5.

Clay Smith of Broken Bow, Okla., and Jake Long of Coffeyville, Kan., paired up to win the team roping buckle, roping two steers in a combined 9.8 seconds.

Jake Cooper (Monument, N.M.) and Tyler McKnight (Pollok) were second in 10.0 seconds

Bryson Sechrist of Apache, Okla., posted a time of 8.1 seconds in tie down roping on opening night of the event on Jan. 5 and it stood up as the best, with Cash Enderli of Liberty and Owen Wahlert finishing in a tie for second at 8.3 seconds.

Stan Branco of Chowchilla, Calif., stopped the clock in 9.3 seconds on two head to win the steer wrestling event, with Laramie Warren of Adair, Okla., second in 9.6 seconds.

Aspen Miller of Santa Fe, Tx., stopped the clock in 1.70 seconds to win the Ladies Breakaway roping event, with Shai Schaefer (Lake Creek), Heather McLaughlin (Emelle, Ala.) and Cheyanne Guillory (Kingston, Okla.) sharing second-place tie at 1.80 seconds.

Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi of Lampasas, a two-time world champion, won the barrel racing crown, racing through the cloverleaf patter in 13.53 seconds.

Tiany Schuster of Krum was second in 13.66 seconds.
