HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Permian’s Chavez racing toward a successful senior season

MIDLAND The attitude and work habits Permian’s Christian Chavez cultivates through cross country season propel him into track and field.

His drive led him to strong performances through the fall and he got a solid start to track season at the Tall City Relays Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Chavez came in a close second in the 3,200-meter run after clocking in at 10 minutes, 8.5 seconds, and he followed that up finishing fifth in the 800-meter run with in 2:06.39.

Lubbock Monterey’s David Mora placed first in the 3,200-meter and Chavez’s teammate Luke Persson claimed first in the 800-meter.

Odessa High’s Alex Camacho placed fourth in the 800-meter, stopping the clock in 2:06.24.

Chavez said he felt nervous before competing, but he ultimately pulled through.

He got through his nerves in the 800-meter by relating to his competitors.

“When you’re on that line, you’re going to be scared,” Chavez said. “You’ve got to remember, ‘Everybody else is just as scared as me.’

“I might as well just try to stay calm and go out there knowing that it’s going to be competitive and just run as good as I know.”

The way Chavez approaches his races has positively impacted the rest of his team, according to Permian distance coach Darchelle Welch.

Because of where the Panthers are currently in their phase training, they approached the Tall City Relays as a practice meet.

“That’s what’s really exciting about the times we’re already running today and what Christian is running today, because we’re going to do great things this season,” Welch said. “Especially Christian because it was like a practice for us.”

Like most of their opponents, Chavez and the Panthers were still trying to shake the bugs out from the brief layoff between the end of cross country season to the start of track.

Permian competed in the Tall City Relays against Odessa High, Midland High, Midland Legacy, San Angelo Central, Andrews, Abilene Cooper and Lubbock Monterey.

It was also Chavez’s final participation in the Tall City Relays, as he is now in his senior season.

He didn’t get to compete in the meet last year because it was canceled due to inclement weather in the area.

Being back in Midland gave him flashbacks to the memories he made earlier in his high school career.

“This is my last Midland race, so it feels kind of weird,” Chavez said. “I can feel the memories that I used to have sophomore and freshman year, it feels great seeing people on the track again.”

Welch feels that it’s a good thing having competitors from around the area get the chance to compete in a normal event again.

She said Chavez uses strategy to his advantage during his runs and that’s something that goes back to cross country.

In his 800-meter run, Chavez used a similar approach to his cross country races , pacing himself to start the race and kicking into another gear when he gets near the finish.

“He loves his strategy when he runs and you can see it, he gets excited,” Welch said. “He’s a beast when he runs.”

When the Panthers work on their distance routines, they still put an extra emphasis on speed because of how much impact it will have on a race.

Chavez and his teammates have been helped by the approach, competing in the 3,200-meter race like it’s a speed race.

At the Tall City Relays, the senior got to see some of the competitors he’ll face in District 2-6A action later on in the season.

He knows the races he’ll compete in will increase in difficulty.

“It’s going to be rough, there’s a lot of fast kids out there,” Chavez said. “I can’t wait.”
