HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS: Permian boys in position to advance

LUBBOCK San Angelo Central is leading both the boys and girls team races after the first day of competition at the Region III Gymnastic Championships.

The Bobcats scored 167.30 points in the compulsory round, with Permian second at 163.10 and Abilene Cooper third with 155.30 on Wednesday at Rock Solid Athletics.

Odessa High is sixth with 144.60 points.

The top three teams that reach the qualifying score of 295.00 points will advance to the Texas High School Gymnastics Championships, April 27-29, at A&M Consolidated High School.

Will Brackeen of Lubbok High and Joel Dantzler of Abilene High are tied for the all-around title with 58.40 points, with Tristen Reyna of Abilene Cooper third at 58.30 points.

Sincere Galindo (56.10) and Talan Ramirez (54.20), both from Permian, are sixth and seventh respectively.

Odessa High’s Jesse Hernandez is 11th at 52.70, one spot out of a state qualifying berth in the all-around.

The Lady Cats hold a slim 117.90-116.75 lead over El Paso Eastwood for the girls title, with El Paso Bel Air third at 115.25.

Girls teams must score 215 points to qualify.
