HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Permian comes away with victory in road shootout with Waco Midway

HEWITT The Permian football team came away with its second victory of the season in a shootout against Waco Midway at Panther Stadium.

Permian found some late momentum to seal a 57-41 nondistrict victory.

Permian head coach Jeff Ellison said he liked his team’s fighting attitude, but he wants to see his players avoid getting themselves in tough situations.

“I’m extremely excited about our fight, but we’ve got to get better and more mature as a football team,” Ellison said.

Waco Midway started the game with all the momentum, marching 63 yards down the field until a fumble at the 4 yard line ended the drive.

Although the Permian defense started off with a turnover, the team couldn’t get much going as Permian also suffered a fumble with the clocking winding down in the first quarter.

The home team showcased running back Dominique Hill early as he broke off big runs to set up Waco Midway in good field position throughout the second quarter.

He gave Waco Midway its first lead when he punched in a six-yard run to give the team a 6-0 lead that was shortlived as Permian’s Jadyn Pruitt blocked the extra point and Bryce Woody ran it all the way back to cut the lead to 6-2.

Permian quarterback Rodney Hall then made sure his team didn’t stay down for long, as he cut up field on the next possession to run into his end zone from 50 yards out to give the visitors a 9-6 lead.

It took the Panthers from Waco two plays to get back in the lead, as Dhamir McDonnaugh used a burst of speed after breaking through the line, making the score 13-9 in the second quarter.

The visitors were able to get back to their methodical identity on their next possession, taking almost six minutes off the clock on 13 plays.

Hall capped off the long drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jaquan Richardson, giving Permian a 16-13 lead.

Both teams continued to flip the momentum before the first half came to an end, with Waco Midway taking a 27-23 advantage into the halftime break.

Permian was able to give itself some room to work with when it led 36-34 after a Kayden Baze interception set the team up to start at its 27 yard line in the third quarter.

The visitors found a way to pull away from late in the game, outscoring Midway 34-14 in the second half to seal the win.

Hall completed nine of his 15 pass attempts for 231 yards and three scores through the air, going along with 173 yards on 19 carries and three rushing touchdowns.

Permian receiver Jaquan Richardson hauled in the catches for 111 yards.

The Permian football team returns home to play Amarillo Tascosa at 7 p.m. next Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

“It’s good to get to travel because it prepares you for later in the year,” Ellison said. “But it’s also great to play at home in front of your fans.”
