HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Bronchos snap streak at 706 days

DEL RIO It has been nearly two years since the Odessa High football team had tasted victory.

To refresh its memory with a shutout … even better.

Quarterback Diego Cervantes connected with wide receiver Ivan Carreon for three touchdowns and the Bronchos’ defense forced five turnovers in a 49-0 whitewashing of Del Rio in nondistrict play Friday at Walter Levermann Stadium.

The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for Odessa High, which last won on Sept. 28, 2019, against Harlingen South at Ratliff Stadium. The Bronchos’ last shutout came in 2008 against El Paso Montwood.

Cervantes also scored a rushing touchdown, with Javonte Delce, Dajuan Green and Adrian Madrid adding touchdowns to the Odessa High rout.

The Bronchos (1-1) have a short week in front of them as they will host Lubbock Coronado at 7 p.m. Thursday at Ratliff Stadium.

The Bronchos (1-1) stepped on the gas from the start but came away empty as their first drive resulted in a missed field goal.

They cashed in the next time with the ball, as Delce broke tackles at the line of scrimmage and barreled into the end zone with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter.

Moments later it was 9-0 in favor of the Bronchos after the ball was snapped out of the end zone by the Rams on a punt attempt.

The Cervantes-to-Carreon connection then got cranked up, connecting for touchdowns on back-to-back drives to push Odessa High’s lead to 22-0 with 8:29 remaining to play in the first half.

Sophomore running back Green added to the onslaught with a rushing touchdown before Cervantes capped the first-half scoring with a 1-yard sneak with 1:57 to play.
