Odessa High, with its playoff hopes hanging by a thread, saw those dreams take a hit in the third quarter of a 41-31 loss against Midland High in District 2-6A play Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

The Bronchos are not mathematically eliminated, but would need to win out and then get help from other teams over the final two weeks of the regular season.

Odessa High, leading 17-16 at halftime, went three-and-out on three consecutive third-quarter drives, then gave up an interception for a touchdown on the first possession of the fourth quarter.

Bad snaps and overthrown passes plagued the Bronchos in that third quarter, and the Bulldogs capitalized.

“In games like this against a good Midland high football team, you cannot make these little mistakes because they will come back and bite you,” Bronchos offensive coordinator Creighton Reed said.

What was a one-point lead quickly turned into a 17-point deficit, with the Bronchos trailing 34-17 in the early moments of the fourth quarter.

“It was a pretty even game if we took away third quarter,” Bronchos head coach Dusty Ortiz said. “Three possessions became zero points and we had a pick-six (to open-up the fourth quarter).

“We knew we had to get a couple of stops and they did their job on that part, but we just couldn’t get anything going right outside of halftime.”

The Bronchos (3-5 overall, 0-3 in district) fought back late in the fourth quarter, as quarterback Jaylien Jones found his top target in wide receiver Ivan Carreon for a 46-yard touchdown on a slant following the interception for a touchdown.

After a 9-yard touchdown run by Bulldogs’ quarterback Stroman Bridges, Jones added another 46-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Warren down the left sideline to cut the deficit to 41-31 with 2:12 remaining in the game.

“I saw my players and made sure that they knew they were going to catch those passes for touchdowns,” Jones said.
