Falcons’ comeback upsets No. 3 Rams

SAN ANGELO The UTPB baseball team was one run away from a mercy-rule loss when its bats, along with some mistakes by host Angelo State, started an improbable 14-7 comeback victory in Lone Star Conference play Friday at Foster Field.

Angelo State led 7-0 when UTPB’s Carson Johnson and Austin Hall opened the eighth inning with base hits.

Johnson would score on an infield ground out to put the Falcons on the scoreboard and open the floodgates.

Trailing by five (7-2) later in the inning, UTPB was the beneficiary of four walks and two wild pitches to make it a two-run game.

Then Hall, up for the second time in the inning, singled in a pair of runs to tie the game.

Following two more walks and two more wild pitches, the Falcons led, 9-7

After setting the Rams down in order in the bottom of the eighth, UTPB was able to tack on five more runs in the top of the ninth to break the game open.

Ryan Robinson, one of six Falcons’ pitchers on the day, earned his first victory of the season.

Andrew Troppmann pitched the final two innings for a save.

The teams continue their four-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Foster Field.
