Baseball loses opener

SAN ANTONIO Brandon Broughton homered twice and drove in four runs to lead St. Mary’s to a 6-3 victory against UTPB in Lone Star Conference baseball action Saturday at Dickson Field.

Jake Mares and Clay Bradford also hit home runs for the Rattlers (1-0 overall, 1-0 conference).

St. Mary’s finished the game with six extra-base hits, with Mares going 4 for 5 , whileBroughton was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and the RBIs.

Austin Hall doubled and homered for the Falcons (0-1, 0-1), finishing 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Andrew Girod pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory, while UTPB’s Daniel Enriquez took the loss.

The season-opening series continues Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

Tough half 

LUBBOCK Russell Harrison scored a game-high 27 points to lead Lubbock Christian to a 69-55 victory against UTPB in Lone Stars Conference action Saturday at the Rip Griffin Center.

Najeeb Muhammad and Rowan Mackenzie each finished with 11 points for the Chaps (16-6 overall, 12-4 in conference).

Max Warren scored 17 points to lead the Falcons (11-15, 5-12), with Jalen King adding 13 and DaJuan Jones finishing with 11 in the loss.

UTPB trailed by one, 29-28, at halftime before the host Chaps took control after the break.

 

Too late

LUBBOCK The UTPB women’s basketball team couldn’t get anything going in the first half and lost to Lubbock Christian, 70-50, in Lone Star Conference play Saturday at the Rip Griffin Center.

The Falcons trailed, 41-14 at halftime.

Grace Foster scored 13 points to lead the Lady Chaps (16-8 overall, 11-5 in conference), with Audrey Robertson adding 11 to the victory.

Alexus Quaadman led UTPB (10-13, 7-10) with a game-high 17 points.

Kamari Portalis added 10 points in the loss.

The Falcons are currently tied for ninth in the conference standings, with the top eight qualifying for the Lone Star Conference tournament.
