Wranglers win close contest

COLLEGE STATION The Odessa College men’s golf team earned a one-shot victory over WJCAC rival New Mexico JC to claim the team title at The Happening tournament on Tuesday at The Golf Club @ Texas A&M.

The Wranglers carded a 4-under-par 280 team score in the second round to overtake first-round leaders New Mexico JC and Midland College.

Odessa College shot 283-280—563 for the victory.

The T-Birds finished at 564 (282-282) and the Chaparrals were at even-par 568 (282-286).

Miles Gray of Western Texas College was the individual medalist at 5-under-par 137.

Odessa College’s Alexander Topgaard and Matthis Lefevre of New Mexico JC tied for second one shot back.

Lady Falcons struggle

It was a tough day for the UTPB softball team against UT Tyler on Wednesday at UTPB Field.

The visiting Patriots swept the Falcons, 11-1 and 10-2, in the Lone Star Conference doubleheader with both games finishing early because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Tyler scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning in Game 1 to earn the victory.

Audrey Escamilla was 1 for 4 with three RBIs and Michelle Arias was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and four RBIs in the victory.

UTPB’s Mia Quintero drove in the only Falcons’ run in Game 1.

Tyler’s Courtney Plocheck was 2 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs in Game 2.

Avery Farr also homered in the second game for the Patriots (21-3 overall, 12-2 in conference).

Aracely Araiza had a pair of hits and one RBI in the second game to lead UTPB (4-15, 1-10)
