SILVER CITY, N.M. The UTPB football team came one step closer to winning a Lone Star Conference title with a 56-3 win over Western New Mexico Saturday on the road.
The Falcons (9-1 overall, 7-0 in conference) only led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter but by halftime they had built a 35-0 advantage after scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter alone.
UTPB quarterback Kenny Hrncir went 14-of-21 passes for 219 yards and completed five touchdown passes.
Running back Nemier Herod had 10 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons while wide receiver Gunnar Abseck had four receptions for 53 yards and a score.
Western New Mexico fell to 1-8, 1-7.
The Lone Star Conference title will come down to next week’s regular season finale when conference leaders UTPB and Central Washington (7-2, 7-0) face each other in a 2 p.m. game Nov. 11 at Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland.
The Falcons will also be looking to officially clinch a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs as UTPB is currently ranked No. 3 in the Super Region Four Regional Rankings. The top seven teams in each of the super regions qualify for the national playoffs.
