LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Time to stop the pettiness and go to work

Having served as a City Councilman for 14 years and served on boards of many organizations I have signed many conflict of interest documents. When you sign such a document you cannot vote or participate in the discussion of any item that you might have conflict. Period.

In reference to ODC, Mr. Russell made a mistake and because of his conflict mismanagement was removed from his position. In reference to Councilman Thompson all the correct papers were filed with the City and thus no such mistake happened. Yes, the company who bought out Mr. Thompson filed an incorrect franchise tax return years ago and needs to correct that filing. However that mistake is beyond Mr. Thompson’s responsibility. The City Council appointed an intelligent and caring person for the position on ODC, Dr. Jay Kirk. A great choice.

Now let’s get to work bettering Odessa. Councilwoman Swanner is a champion of the Parks system, Councilman Matta wants to bring affordable housing to south and west Odessa, Councilwoman Willis has the employees of the City and the citizens of Odessa in her heart, Councilwoman White is a champion for our first responders, and Councilman Sprawls and Thompson are businessmen who love Odessa. Now is the time for leadership to move us forward in doing the business of Odessa and Mayor Joven can do just that.

Please stop the pettiness and work to make Odessa a better place to live and a better place to do business. Go bless America, God bless Texas and God bless Odessa. Let’s get down to the business of Odessa.

Sincerely,

Dr. James B. Goates

Odessa
