Uber driver punched, robbed

A 35-year-old Odessa man was arrested early Friday morning after an Uber driver told police he stole his keys and $43 in cash from him.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, dispatchers received a disturbance call from the Buffalo Wild Wings on Grandview Avenue around 2 a.m. The caller said an intoxicated man had assaulted an Uber driver and was last seen running east on Penbrook Street.

While some officers went to the restaurant, other officers found and detained an intoxicated Daniel Vela, who had fallen and cut his face while running, the report stated.

The Uber driver told officers he went to the restaurant to pick up Vela and once Vela was inside the car, he grabbed his keys and cash from the center console and punched him in the face before fleeing on foot, the report stated.

Vela was arrested on suspicion of robbery and public intoxication after being treated at the hospital. He was released from the Ector County jail Saturday after posting surety bonds totaling $20,000.
