Texas Veterans Commission to present over $2.2M in grants to nine West Texas veteran service organizations

AUSTIN On Sept. 22, at 10 a.m., the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) will present $2,232,000 in grants to nine west Texas organizations for providing services to veterans and their families in the FVA West Texas Region, a press release said. These grants are anticipated to serve more than 47,627 veterans. The presentation will be made by TVC Commissioner and Marine Corps veteran Mike Hernandez at the El Paso County Courthouse, 3rd Floor Commissioners Courtroom, 500 E. San Antonio, El Paso.

The FVA West Texas Region is a 23 county area ranging from Gaines, Dawson, and Borden Counties in the north to Brewster County in the south, and Howard, Glassock, Upton, Pecos, and Terrell Counties in the east to El Paso County in the west.

TVC Commissioners approved grant awards in May, totaling over $36.3 million to over 135 organizations across Texas and estimated to serve more than 81,770 veterans.

Since 2009 through the current 2023-2024 grant cycle, more than $270 million in grant funding has been awarded through 1,255 FVA grants, serving an estimated 481,000 Texas veterans and their family members.

The grants support a wide range of services from emergency financial assistance to transportation, legal services to family support services and home modification to rental and mortgage assistance. The TVC awards grants in five categories: General Assistance, Housing for Texas Heroes, Veterans Mental Health Grants, Veterans Treatment Courts, and Veteran County Service Officers.

Funding for these grants is generated primarily by the Texas Lottery Commission’s games designated for veteran support. Other sources of funding for the grants come from individual donation options on drivers’ licenses, licenses to carry a handgun, outdoor recreation licenses for hunting and fishing, and vehicle registrations.
