After a brief hiatus, the Odessa Parks and Recreation Department is bringing back its “Take Me Fishing” event.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 5 at Comanche Trail South Pond Park.

There will be numerous activities during the day including food, a fishing class, supplies, games and prizes.

Event Specialist for the City of Odessa Parks and Recreation Department Anna Lee said this event hasn’t taken place for the last two years due to COVID.

“We have it back up and running and we’re focusing on children having the opportunity to be outside and go fishing because, obviously this is West Texas so there’s not many fishing opportunities out here,” Lee said. “It’s just a good chance to teach kids about fishing and the nature behind it. We’ll have the Texas Parks and Wildlife do a 15-minute class for kids to go to learn a couple of details about all the good parts of fishing and what it can do. It’ll be fun and family-focused for parents to be with their kids. It’ll be a relaxing and fun event.”

With this year’s edition of “Take Me Fishing” scheduled to take place, Lee said she is excited to have this event back after the cancellations.

“It feels really good, especially with this event being held outdoors, it’ll feel good to be able to do things with the community,” Lee said. “That’s the whole point of doing these events. People who don’t have the time or the money to go out to those big fancy lakes to go fishing, this gives them a chance to be home and close by. We want it to be fun and get the community up and going again.”

The event is free and on-site registration will begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 5.

At 10:45 a.m., the Texas Parks and Wildlife and Odessa Parks representatives will teach the basics of traditional fishing such as tying the hook onto the line, casting a spin, casting reel, identifying fish and demonstrating how to be a safe and responsible angler.

Free food and other items for lunch will be provided by Tasty Bones Rollin Kitchen for participants only.

Fishing licenses will be required for anyone ages 18 and older.

Fishing licenses can be obtained through Academy, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Walmart.

ATMOS Energy is helping sponsoring the event.

“ATMOS Energy has been a very important sponsor,” Lee said. “They’ve been involved and will have these really nice little bags of different things that we’ll have at the time of registration and they’ve been very involved and have been a great support for the organization and the Take Me Fishing events over the past couple of years.”
