Odessan arrested on felony charge in jail

A 64-year-old Odessa man arrested on a misdemeanor warrant is now facing a felony drug charge after deputies said jail camera footage showed him trying to hide a glass vial of methamphetamine.

According to an Ector County Sheriff’s Office report, Ector County jail staff found a vial containing 9.9 grams of methamphetamine in the intake area around 5 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.

The staff reviewed camera footage and saw Blake Eugene Byrd reach into his left pocket, pull the vial from his pocket, drop it and kick it away from him, the report stated.

Byrd was booked into the jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony and a McCullouch County warrant for possession of a dangerous drug.

He remained in custody Monday night on surety bonds totaling $52,500.
