Odessan accused of choking, cutting girlfriend

An Odessa man was arrested Friday afternoon after an argument over finances allegedly led to him threatening to cut out his girlfriend’s eyeball.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers were asked to check the welfare of someone in a Whitaker Avenue apartment around 4:15 p.m. Friday.

When officers arrived, a woman with a red neck and lacerated eyelid answered the door, the report stated. The woman said everything was “OK,” but an officer thought she seemed reserved and he asked permission to enter the apartment.

Once inside the apartment, Joe Escobedo told officers he’d had a scuffle with the woman over finances, the report stated.

When interviewed further, the woman said that during the argument Escobedo threw her on the bed, climbed on top of her and choked her almost to the point of unconsciousness, the report stated.

The woman further stated Escobedo held a pocket knife to her left eye and said he was going to remove her eyeball before actually cutting her eyelid, the report stated. She was able to push the knife away, but hurt her finger in the process.

Escobedo was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remained in the Ector County jail Tuesday on a U.S. Marshals hold and a $20,000 surety bond.
