Odessa students express power of AVID

Complex Community Federal Credit Union announced on Wednesday its sponsorship of the AVID Senior Experience, showcasing the work of the ECISD AVID. CCFCU is involved with AVID and teaches in all the AVID classes throughout the district.

During this two-day event, selected Odessa students from Permian High, Odessa High, New Tech Odessa, Odessa Collegiate Academy and Odessa Career and Technical Early College High School will participate in activities and demonstrations that will explain how the AVID program has changed their lives.

The event will kick off from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Odessa College Black Box Theater, located at 2308 Shakespeare Road in Odessa. The event will conclude from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the same location.

AVID equips teachers and schools with what they need to help students succeed on a path to college and career success. Students may be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID makes the concept of attending college less of a foreign concept.

“As a student AVID wasn’t the thing that fixed us, it was the people who were doing AVID that gave us this opportunity to really take a hold of a future that wasn’t necessarily an option for a lot of us,” Jonathan Grant Brown, AVID Alumni, and UTPB Alumni, stated in the press release.

According to studies, 76% of AVID seniors are from a low socioeconomic status background, and 86% are underrepresented students. Nevertheless, they outperform their peers in crucial metrics nationwide. Texas AVID High School seniors have a 100% high school graduation rate with an average GPA of 3.4 and 72% of AVID students are accepted into a four-year college.
