Murder suspect back in Ector County

An 18-year-old Odessa man accused of fatally shooting his cousin with an assault rifle was booked into the Ector County jail Tuesday night.

Logan Allen is being held on one count of murder and two warrants out of Wharton County. He’s accused of failing to appear in an public servant assault case and of criminal mischief.

He’s being held on a $1 million surety bond in the death of Kayla Allen.

According to court documents and Sheriff Mike Griffis, deputies were dispatched to the 9000 block of West Albert Drive in reference to a gunshot victim around 3:45 p.m. Monday. When deputies arrived, they found Kayla Allen dead in front of a residence.

According to court documents, evidence at the scene indicated the victim had been shot with a high power, possibly an assault, style rifle.

Security camera footage captured the shooting and confirmed the shooter was Logan Allen, whom family members described as suffering from mental issues, court documents detailed.

The deputies received information the suspect left in the victim’s silver Nissan and Ward County deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers found him at marker 80 on Interstate 20 in Ward County and detained him, Griffis said.

Court documents indicate deputies recovered an AR-style rifle from the car.

The 18-year-old confessed to shooting his cousin, but the motive remains unknown, Griffis said.

Ector County court records show Logan Allen was placed on two years deferred adjudication in January after pleading guilty to lesser included – attempted burglary of a habitation. He was also ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and pay nearly $2,900 in restitution to Dollar General.

Kayla Allen was a mother of two.
