Murder suspect arrested in robbery case

An 18-year-old Odessa man accused of murdering a 15-year-old boy in January 2023 during a robbery has been arrested along with his brother for allegedly beating another 15-year-old boy during a robbery.

Omar Matthew Gutierrez is scheduled to go to trial in August in the death of Bryan Sanchez.

According to an Odessa Police Department report released Thursday, a 15-year-old boy had to seek medical attention Monday after he told authorities three other teenagers beat and robbed him.

An officer was dispatched to Odessa Regional Medical Center around 7:30 p.m., but the boy had already been discharged.

When the officer spoke to the boy at home, the teenager said he’d been walking near Odessa High School when he heard someone call his name and a gray Cadillac pulled up, the report stated.

The teenager said two teens he knows as Omar Gutierrez and another teenager jumped out of the car and began assaulting him, even punching him as he laid on the ground, the report stated.

During the assault, the boy said the three stole from him. According to the report, the items were a 14 carat gold necklace valued at $200 and a belt and buckle valued at $170.

After speaking with a resident near the alleged attack, officers determined it took place around noon, the report stated.

According to the report, officers soon discovered Omar Elijah Gutierrez, 17, had posted a video to social media of him showing off his “new chain” in the backseat of a Cadillac. Also seen in the video was the 15-year-old suspect holding a leather belt and buckle saying it was a “new belt” and Omar Matthew Gutierrez, 18, in the driver’s seat.

The report indicates the younger Gutierrez brother had a red substance on his hand and the 15-year-old had a red substance on his jeans and both indicated it belonged to someone else.

A further investigation revealed all three suspects are associated with a silver Cadillac and a Flock camera recorded them in the area less than an hour after the incident, the report stated.

The brothers were arrested on suspicion of robbery; it’s unclear from the report what happened to the other suspect. Both remained in the Ector County jail Thursday on surety bonds of $100,000 each.

According to Ector County District Court records Omar Matthew Gutierrez was indicted in April 2023 on murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges in Sanchez’s death.

According to an Ector County Sheriff’s Office report, a 17-year-old boy told detectives he picked up Sanchez and another friend and they went to the home of Omar Matthew Gutierrez, in the 10000 block of Cielo Alto later that night.

When they got to the house, the teenager said Sanchez stayed in the car, but his other friend got out. At that time, the teenager said Omar Matthew Gutierrez and a fifth teenager, Thomas Terrazas, began walking toward the vehicle, according to the report.

The teenager told detectives Gutierrez wanted all of his items and stuck a pistol in the window and pointed it at him, the report stated. He said he started to give him his watch, but then drove away.

Sanchez, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was struck by three bullets after Gutierrez opened fire, the teenager told authorities.

The teenager and Sanchez were found in a Ford Escape in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant in the 1700 block of West County Road. Sanchez died after being taken to Medical Center Hospital by emergency personnel.

According to the report, Gutierrez came into the sheriff’s office and confessed to shooting Sanchez. He was later released from jail after posting surety bonds totaling $150,000.

Terrazas was arrested a couple of weeks later. He, too, is awaiting trial on a murder charge.
