Highway 302 work to alter sand plant’s operations

Black Mountain entrances will be closed on alternate days

KERMIT Paving operations near the Black Mountain sand plant on Highway 302 in Winkler County a few miles east of Kermit will alter the plant’s operation schedule on Saturday and Sunday weather permitting, a Texas Department of Transportation press release stated.

The entire project stretches for 24.4 miles and begins at Farm-to-Market Road 181 in Ector County and ends at County Road 313 in Winkler County, the press release stated. A width restriction and a reduced speed limit will be put in place as well. Increased law enforcement may also be present.

The project is expected to be completed in fall 2022. FNF Construction of Tempe, Ariz., won the project with a low bid of a little more than $63.3 million.

On Saturday, the press release stated the El Dorado entrance of the Black Mountain sand plant will be closed for paving and widening work to be done in front of the entrance. This entrance is the western entrance to the sand plant facility and is about four miles east of Kermit.

On Sunday, TxDOT says the Vest entrance of the Black Mountain sand plant will be closed for paving and widening work to be done in front of the entrance. This entrance is the eastern entrance to the sand plant facility and is about nine miles east of Kermit.

On Saturday, all trucks will be routed to the Vest entrance. On Sunday, all trucks will be routed to the El Dorado entrance.

This work is part of a project to rehabilitate more than 24 miles of Highway 302 in Ector and Winkler counties. The project will also widen certain sections of the road to provide continuous alternating passing lanes and to provide auxiliary plans at the sand plant entrances.
