GUEST VIEW: UT Austin internship program brings students home

By Akshathh “Jack” Mukkera

In a remarkable initiative to strengthen connections between students and their hometown communities, the University of Texas at Austin has launched an innovative internship program. This exceptional opportunity not only equips students with invaluable real-world experience but also sends them back to their roots in Odessa and other cities across the state to work closely with local businesses and organizations, gaining a deep understanding of the issues and challenges that their communities face.

This year, the program had the privilege of placing three students in Odessa — one at the Ellen Noël Art Museum, another at the Odessa Marriott, and myself spending time at the Odessa Chamber of Commerce.

I vividly recall my first day at the Chamber, filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. I arrived thirty minutes early, eager to make a strong impression. As the doors opened, I was greeted with the warm welcome that Odessa is famous for, and I stepped into one of the most dynamic work environments I’ve ever encountered. From attending ribbon-cutting ceremonies to participating in business meetings, I quickly immersed myself in the vibrant activities of the Chamber.

As my internship progressed, I found myself engaged in a myriad of tasks that challenged and enriched my learning experience. From writing blog posts for the Chamber and Discover Odessa to graphic design work for Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives (TCCE) annual conference events, and assisting the Economic Development department with research, I gained invaluable insights into how businesses and local governments operate. This firsthand exposure taught me the significance of even the smallest tasks in larger settings.

Among my most cherished experiences this summer was when I had the opportunity to photograph my first ribbon-cutting event independently. From being an observer to actively working to promote my community and understand its people, their spirit, and what makes Odessa special, I felt a deep sense of pride. It was a moment of personal growth and an affirmation of the profound impact I could make on my community.

The internship program not only provided me with invaluable professional growth but also allowed me to reconnect with my hometown. Each day spent at the Chamber deepened my appreciation for Odessa’s unique identity and the spirit of its people. Understanding the challenges and resources of my community inspired me to be a more active participant in its development and growth.

As my internship draws to a close, I am immensely grateful to the University of Texas at Austin and The Odessa Chamber of Commerce for this extraordinary opportunity. This transformative experience has empowered me with the tools and knowledge to contribute positively to my community and pursue my career with a sense of purpose. I am excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead, and I am committed to making a lasting impact in Odessa and beyond.
