Ellen Noël to host opening reception for new exhibit

The Ellen Noël Art Museum presents a gallery exhibition Garment/View on loan from Tim Gonchoroff with an opening reception with free admission scheduled at 6 p.m. June 9, in the Presidential Archives at University of Texas Permian Basin, 4919 E. University Blvd. The event will include with an artist talk from artist Tim Gonchoroff.

Tim Gonchoroff is a self-taught weaver that uses a variety of non-traditional materials from unexpected sources such as shopping bags, vinyl advertising banners, and video cassette tapes, a press release detailed. His work focuses on traditional crafting processes including natural dyeing, weaving, carpentry, and many other skills, as a channel for investigating and documenting environmental issues in our society.

Currently, Gonchoroff’s body of work has been combining traditional weaving patterns and techniques with non-traditional materials to reflect on their disposable value. He strongly believes that artists should be cognizant of the materials they use, how they’re produced, and what waste they may leave behind. “We are all contributing to material processes and waste that are continuously shaping our environment — myself included — but being aware of that impact has greatly shaped the conceptual development of my work.”

The Ellen Noël offers free admission, and currently has pieces displayed from the museum’s permanent collection, the Presidential Archives’ permanent collection, as well as these cultivated galleries on loan from Tim Gonchoroff. These must-see collections will be displayed beginning June 9 through September 3. The museum has temporarily relocated to the Presidential Archives at 4919 East University Blvd. while the museum’s original location undergoes renovation work.

The Ellen Noël has also scheduled a reception for Teen Artist Residency Program students from 5:30 to 6 p.m. June 9. This special reception introduces this year’s TARP students who worked with visiting Fiber artist, Tim Gonchoroff, in creating an art installation displayed in the museum’s rotunda. Students, along with their parents, friends, and community members are welcome to celebrate their hard work created during this week-long workshop.
