Board to mull redistricting plan

The Odessa College Board of Trustees will consider approving the proposed redistricting plan for the college’s seven single-member trustee districts and the proposed plan for OC’s two single-member trustee megadistricts.

Trustees also will consider an effective date when they meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Zant Room of the Saulsbury Campus Center.

The board will also consider exercising the option in Texas Education Code Section 130.0826 to permit trustees in office when a redistricting plan is adopted to serve for the remainder of their terms, the agenda detailed.

The nine-member board has one vacancy in District 5 with former trustee Larry Johnson’s resignation.

Reorganization of the board also will be considered.

Also on the agenda is funding for Odessa College’s downtown presence at 222 E. Fourth St.

Vice President of Administrative Services Ken Zartner said at a May 18 board workshop that a request for $1.5 million will be made to the board to start Phase I of the downtown project.

Bids were scheduled to be sent out May 25 and a special board meeting is expected June 16 to review and select bids. Phase I would start June 17 and be completed in June 2023, Zartner said.

He added that the meeting may be moved to June 15.

Zartner said the college wants the new area to be open by next summer and to serve as an area for Firecracker Fandango and Hot Summer Nights.

Appointment of independent auditors and monthly financial statements and budget amendments will also be considered.

Informational items on college life coaches, institutional effectiveness, Vision 2030+; the President’s Report; a student profile; record graduation; Ross Elementary invasion; Employee of Excellence Award winners; and the Promise Program event will be presented, as well.
