Change in water disinfection

Starting next week Odessans may start smelling a bleach or chlorine-like smell in their water, but city officials said there’s nothing to be concerned about.

For approximately one month, starting June 2, the city will only be using chlorine to disinfect the water supply instead of chlorine and ammonia. According to a City of Odessa news release, the city will be performing proactive maintenance in the distribution system to assist in maintaining adequate chlorine residuals.

The city has performed this same proactive maintenance in past years with minimal impact to its customers and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has been notified of the change.
