DPS: Friday accident victim was passenger, not driver

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday that a 51-year-old Odessa man who died early Friday morning in a one-vehicle crash was actually the passenger, not the driver as originally reported.

According to DPS, Mario Lopez-Valdez, 30, of Odessa was traveling south on Loop 338 when his Chevrolet Impala veered off the west side of the roadway 2.5 miles south of Odessa and hit a fence.

Luis Carlos Lujan-Gameros was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which took place shortly before 1 a.m..

Lopez-Valdez was treated at Medical Center Hospital and released.

“Upon follow up investigation at Medical Center Hospital, it was determined Lopez-Valdez, Mario was the driver of vehicle 1,” DPS said Tuesday.
