DNA links Odessan to alleged sexual assault

An Odessa man was arrested Monday after authorities said DNA linked him to a June sexual assault.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, a 23-year-old woman told authorities that on June 10 she went to a bar with her friend Jonathan Cooke and then agreed to join him and a friend on a party bus.

The woman said she had some alcoholic drinks and the next thing she knew she was waking up naked and bleeding in Cooke’s bed and Cooke was gone, the report stated.

The woman went to Medical Center Hospital and a sexual assault nurse examiner discovered injuries consistent with a sexual assault, the report stated.

The woman provided detectives with Cooke’s phone number and his address and they were able to determine Cooke was actually Spencer Buckley, 31, according to the report.

Detectives obtained Buckley’s DNA via a search warrant and on Aug. 9, DPS informed them the probability the DNA found inside the woman was Buckley’s is 178 cotillion times greater than it being anyone else’s, the report stated.

Buckley was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. He was released from the Ector County jail the same day after posting a $50,000 surety bond.
