Odessa man arrested after allegedly threatening to torch home and vehicles

A 29-year-old Odessa man was arrested Saturday after officers responding to a call found his trailer and his vehicles drenched in gasoline.

According an Odessa Police Department report, officers received a disturbance call a few minutes after midnight Saturday from the 4800 block of North Golder Avenue. When one of the officers went inside the home, he could smell gasoline and a woman told him her husband, David Steve Ortiz, had threatened to burn the home down and poured gas all over using a red metal can.

The officer found a red metal gas can inside a bedroom with a paper towel wrapped around the handle he thought could be used as the fuse, the report said.

Officers also discovered gas had been poured throughout the wife’s Lincoln Navigator and Ortiz’s Dodge Caravan, according to the report.

Ortiz himself smelled of gasoline and had a torch lighter in his pocket, the report stated.

Ortiz was arrested on suspicion of attempted arson of a habitation and was released from the Ector County jail Tuesday after posting a $25,000 surety bond.
