Man charged with racing, evading with one-year-old in vehicle

Odessa police arrested a man Saturday, accusing him of racing and evading police, all with a one-year-old child in the vehicle.

John Eric McGuire, 25, was charged with evading arrest or detention in a motor vehicle, endangering a child and racing on a highway.

An Odessa police news release stated officers observed two vehicles racing southbound in the 2100 block of Andrews Highway around 10 p.m. Saturday. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a brown 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, but it evaded officers before eventually stopping in the area of 19th Street and Kermit Highway. McGuire was identified as the driver.

A one-year-old boy was in the back seat area, the release stated. McGuire was then arrested and charged. Child Protective Services was notified of the incident and the child was released to his mother, the release detailed.

Evading arrest or detention in a motor vehicle is a third-degree felony, while endangering a child is a state jail felony.
