STAAR and End of Course exam results show areas of improvement by Ector County ISD students this year. The improvement spanned across grade levels, particularly in reading, math, and science when these 2022 scores are compared to the tests taken in 2021.
“I am extremely proud of our 4,200 staff members and our students,” ECISD Superintendent Scott Muri said in a news release. “These scores are the result of an enormous amount of strategic work by teachers, principals and staff who dedicated themselves to our students. And it shows we have resilient kids.”
In the fall of 2019, ECISD implemented a new strategic plan with initiatives to improve student achievement, build teacher and leader capacity, and improve day-to-day support for kids. The elements of the plan drove the work being done each day, a news release stated.
“We have kept the focus on our strategic priorities,” Muri stated in a news release. “Even in the midst of the pandemic and the chaos it created, we remained intentional in our actions, and the result is significant academic improvement for our students.”
A Twitter post from the Texas Education Agency says due to the impact of COVID-19 they have delayed releasing STAAR results for grades three through eight to run additional analyses. The plan was to release them June 24, but now plans are to release them at the end of the week in the parent and analytic portals. They did release end of course results at https://www.oaoa.com/local-news/education/tea-releases-2022-staar-results/
The release details a few of the highlights:
>> ECISD saw double-digit increases, as much as 18 points, across multiple grade levels and subjects.
>> Elementary and middle school reading improved in 18 of 18 measures.
>> Elementary & middle school Math improved in 16 of 18 measures.
>> Science results for fifth and eighth grades increased in 6 of 6 measures.
>> Algebra I and biology showed increases in 6 of 6 measures.
“Something to consider,” Muri said. “Many of the middle school measures in reading and math are better than our middle schools in 2019 – before the pandemic closures. This is great news.”
Areas of concern include social studies and U.S. History, English I and English II. While most of these decreases are between 1 and 3 points and followed a pattern seen across the state, the results must be studied to determine why improvements were not seen.
“The question, of course, is what’s next?” Muri said. “We will enter the third year of our strategic plan with the goal of refining the things we do. We are not where we need to be as a school system. However, the data clearly show we are making progress. We have the road map, now we must follow the course while continuing to improve.
“Thank you to all of our teachers and staff, to all of our students and families, and to our district leaders and Trustees. This success does not happen without everyone’s full commitment to academic excellence. It’s a new day in ECISD,” he said.
