T-shirt scam targets Odessa

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce received a report Thursday from a chamber member that an alleged company by the name of “Touchdown Sports” is trying to solicit sponsorships and advertisements for T-shirts on behalf of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
After receiving a call from a chamber member questioning its legitimacy, UTPB Athletic Director Steve Aicinena was contacted.
“They do not have a contract with us,” Aicinena said in a news release. “What they are claiming is that ‘A’ person on campus told them they could proceed, and therefore is not legitimate. Anyone who is contacted by ‘Touchdown Sports’ or any other organization that is not an employee of the (UTPB) athletic department or university should be considered unauthorized.”
Reports also were found about this same company attempting to target local Seminole business residents by claiming association with the Seminole School District in June of 2016, the release said.
The release said the it is the chamber’s belief that the company is using the Odessa Chamber of Commerce directory to target its companies, using a Dallas-Fort Worth area code (817) and offering T-shirt advertisements on behalf of UTPB.
