Family escapes injury during fire

A family of five escaped with their lives Wednesday during a mobile home fire where the occupant doused the flames with a garden hose but couldn’t save his belongings.
No one was hurt in the fire that was reported at 8:15 p.m. and occurred in the 4800 block of Golder Avenue. A sofa caught fire inside the living room of the home, which the occupant tried pushing out of his front door only to see flames blacken the exterior portion of the entrance, Odessa Fire/Rescue Battalion Chief Bobby White said.
But the occupant, whose name was not available, grabbed a garden hose and put out the flames himself by the time firefighters arrived, White said. The contents are considered a total loss and the home itself could not be occupied at least for Wednesday night, White said.
The cause of the fire would remain undetermined, said Odessa Fire Capt. Martin Moya. Representatives of the local chapter of the Red Cross were called to help out the two adults and three children who were left homeless because of the fire, White said.
