WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Lady Chaps rally against UTPB

UTPB women’s volleyball coach Tim Loesch scanned the scoresheet after the Falcons faced Lubbock Christian University and shook his head.

“There’s the story of the match,” he said. “29 hitting errors.

“You can’t do that against good teams.”

Kiana Fallaha had 13 kills to lead the visiting Lady Chaps to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 victory in Lone Star Conference play Saturday at the Falcon Dome.

Aaliyah Gray added 10 kills as Lubbock Christian improved to 9-12 overall, 5-5 in conference.

Aquincia Strambler had a match-high 16 kills to lead the Falcons (10-9, 5-3).

Mayce Barker and Chandra Reed each finished with six, while Jenna Gray had 18 assists on the afternoon.

UTPB had some early success early in the match running its quick attack in the middle, Gray moving the ball around and keeping the Lady Chaps’ defenders off balance.

It paid off with a two-point lead (21-19) late in first set, at which point Lubbock Christian took over the set.

The Lady Chaps got some help from UTPB as the Lady Falcons made three straight hitting errors to loss the lead, with Aaliyah Gray adding a kill for a 23-21 lead.

The teams then traded sideouts, with Gray finishing the first set with a kill.

Lubbock Christian took control with a four-point run in the second set for a 19-15 lead en route to a 2-0 lead.

The third set was a carbon copy of the first, with the Lady Chaps gaining control by winning six of the final eight points for a sweep.

“They are a good team,” Loesch said of the Lady Chaps. “They are right behind us in the standings and it’s going to be tight this year because they are only taking eight teams to the playoffs, instead of 12 (in 2021).”
