TOKYO Bryce Hoppel finished in third place with a time of 1 minute, 45.64 secods of his first heat of the Olympic 800 meter run Friday at Olympic Stadium.
Hoppel finished just behind heat winner Emmanuel Korir (1:45.33) and runner-up Mateusz Borkowski of Poland (1:45.34).
Hoppel ran in the sixth and final heat Friday and earned his spot in the semifinals thanks to a top-three finish. The top six times that did not finish in the top three also qualify.
He will run in the first of three semifinal heats that are scheduled to take place Sunday beginning at 6:05 a.m. Central time.
The top two finishers in each heat plus the next two fastest times will advance to the final Wednesday.
