HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Monahans off to a strong start at state

KYLE The Monahans boys golf team got off to a good start, shooting a team total of 307 to open the UIL Class 4A State Golf Tournament Monday at Plum Creek Golf Club.
The Loboes enjoy a 16-shot lead over Gatesville (323) and 19 over Andrews (326). The second place and 11th place teams are separated by just 13 shots after 18 holes.
Sophomore Bond Heflin led Monahans with a 2-over-par 73, followed by a 74 from senior J.T. Pittman. Senior Nick Carnero also shot 79 for another sub-80 round.
Sebastian Ortiz led the Mustangs with an 80, with Carder Pool, Blake Sanford, Tucker Williamson and Kelby Pitkin all finishing with 82.
Seminole freshman Cason Johnson shot an opening-round 78 and is seven shots back of Jack Burke of Orange Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the medalist race.
Johnson tees off of No. 1 at 8:50 a.m. tomorrow morning while Andrews and Monahans will be in the final grouping with Gatesville starting at 9:10 a.m.
