HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Permian’s Chavez has a nice day in Abilene

ABILENE Permian’s Christian Chavez had a strong showing at the Wildcat Relays with a first-, second- and fifth place finish Friday at Elmer Gray Stadium.

Chavez won the Boys Division I 1,600 in a time of four minutes, 29.38 seconds, .05 seconds faster than runner up David Mora of Lubbock Monterey (4:29.43). Permian’s Adriel Hinojos was fifth in 4:46.40.

Chavez finished second in the 3,200 in 10:00.43 and then added a fifth-place effort in the 800 (2:07.25) to his day.

Hinojos was fourth in 10:20.8 and Permian’s Luke Persson finished third in the 800 at 2:04.21.

Mora earned the the 3,200 title in 9:48.89, along with the 800 crown in 1:57.16.

Permian’s Jaye Saenz earned a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 110 Hurdles (19.46 seconds) and 300 Hurdles (42.09 seconds).

On the girls side, Permian’s Kendall Mathis and Briannah Garcia finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,600. Mathis finished in 5:46.52, with Garcia just behind at 5:48.78.

Mathis added a runner-up finish in the 3,200 (12:43.25), with teammate Abigail Scott in third (13.1241).

The sprinters stepped into the spotlight in the 800-meter relay, with Jamorah Caufield, Emily Madrid, Raegan Thurmond and Amaris Woodruff finishing second in 1:49.26.

Permian’s Jaiah George finished second in the high jump, clearing five feet for the silver medal.
