LUBBOCK The Odessa High Bronchos dropped their first game of the season with a 44-42 loss to Lubbock Monterey Friday at Lowrey Field.
For the Plainsmen (1-0), it was their first win in nearly two years as the victory snapped their 10-game losing streak.
It was Monterey’s first victory since a 44-38 contest against Palo Duro in Nov. 2021.
Odessa High scored late in the first half on an Andrew Rodriguez touchdown and the Bronchos’ 2-point conversion tied the game up at 14-all at halftime.
Odessa High took a 28-14 lead in the third quarter before Monterey started battling back.
A 35-yard field goal by Monterey’s Carlton Dobbins late in the game ended up giving the Plainsmen the two-point win.
Odessa High will be on the road again next week with a Thursday night game at El Paso Americas at 7 p.m. Aug. 31.
