HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: OHS looking to recover against Wolfforth Frenship

The Odessa High football team is hoping to recover after last week’s 59-28 loss to Midland High on the road.

The Bronchos will now have a tough test against a team that’s desperate to keep its playoff hopes alive, Wolfforth Frenship in a 7 p.m. contest this Friday in Wolfforth.

Odessa High (5-2 overall, 2-1 in 2-6A) is still very much alive in the playoff hunt while Frenship (6-2, 1-2) is also hanging on after surviving a 46-44 win over Permian last week after a late 32-yard field goal by Drew Cox with 2:32 remaining.

The Tigers are currently in a tie for fourth place with Permian in the District 2-6A standings and the top four teams advance to the playoffs.

Midland High (8-0, 3-0) is alone at the top and will face Midland Legacy in this week’s rivalry contest at Astound Broadband Stadium.

Odessa High is currently third and has the same district record as the Rebels.

Both the Bronchos and the Rebels will close out the regular season next week at Ratliff Stadium in what is sure to be a barn-burner.

>> TOUGH START: The Bronchos fell behind early and struggled to get back up for the remainder of the game in last week’s loss.

Midland High led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter and 42-14 at halftime. OHS managed to score a touchdown once in each quarter, but it was nowhere near enough to catch up as the Bulldogs held on for the district win.

>> PLAYING TO SURVIVE: The Tigers need a win to keep any hopes of their playoff chances alive.

After beginning the season on a promising note, Frenship fell to Midland Legacy 63-56 on Oct. 6 to begin district play.

After that, the Tigers came up short against Midland High, losing 38-28 the next week at home.

Last week’s win over Permian kept a desperate Tiger team alive, but Frenship might need to win its final two remaining games to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

Frenship will end its regular season next week on the road against San Angelo Central.

Odessa High, on the other hand, is still alive in the playoff hunt, but if the Bronchos lose the next two games, things could be different.

Odessa High head coach Dusty Ortiz could not be reached for comment on this week’s notebook.
