HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Injuries plague Bronchos in loss to Midland Legacy

It was going to be a tall task for Odessa High to match Midland Legacy’s ability on offense and defense when the teams met Friday night.

When the Bronchos lost three key players in the first half, it became impossible.

The visiting Rebels dominated from the opening whistle, running away to a 65-0 victory in District 2-6A play at Ratliff Stadium.

The Rebels improved to 6-1 overall, 3-0 in district, while Odessa High dropped to 3-5, 1-3.

Midland Legacy finished with 611 yards on offense, while the defense intercepted four passes, three by John Washington to tie a program single-game record.

Running back Makhilyn Young finished with 184 yards on 12 carries, with four touchdowns, and had an 86-yard touchdown nullified by a holding penalty.

Rebels quarterback Marcos Davila finished 15-of-17 passing for 297 yards and three touchdowns before giving way to backups in the second half.

Odessa High had just 171 yards of offense, 97 on the ground, but the defense did recover four fumbles.

The loss is an afterthought for Odessa High, however, after quarterback Diego Cervantes, kicker Camilo Nicolas and running back Javonte Delce all were knocked from the game in the first 24 minutes.

Cervantes’ injury is potentially the most damaging, the senior leader visibly upset as the Odessa High training staff worked on him on the sideline before ruling him out for the rest of the contest.

He was hurt at the end of a scramble that saw him gain six yards to the Rebels’ 28 at the midway point of the first quarter.

That left the Odessa High staff scrambling to find some offense with Jaylien Jones and the Ivan Carreon moving behind center to try and move the team.

Neither were effective as the Rebels’ defense brought pressure on every snap, forcing the replacement quarterbacks to make decisions quicker than expected.

They finished a combined 3-of-18 passing for 45 yards and four touchdowns.

Cervantes came into the game with 2,031 passing yards and 17 touchdowns, along with 13 rushing touchdowns.

He had completed 4 of 6 passes for 29 yards before the injury.

Odessa High has just two regular-season games remaining and must win both to have a chance to make the postseason.

The Bronchos will travel to face Abilene High next week before hosting Wolfforth Frenship on Oct. 29 at Ratliff Stadium.

Odessa High’s bye week is Nov. 5, the final night of the regular season.
