HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Crane second at 7-on-7 state tournament

COLLEGE STATION Crane wrapped up a strong run at the Texas State 7-on-7 Division IIIChampionships Friday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

The Golden Cranes advanced all the way to the championship game, where they fell 27-19 to the Poth Pirates.

It was the only loss that Crane had during the last two days after finishing 3-0 in pool play Thursday and earning the top seed out of Pool F.

In Friday’s bracket play, the Golden Cranes defeated Arp 28-0, Flatonia 39-28, Comfort 39-34 and Falls City 28-20 to advance to the championship game. Crane finished the tournament with a 7-1 record.

Other Permian Basin teams completed their runs at the state tournament earlier Friday. Alpine was the only other area team to advance past the first round of the knockout bracket. The Fightin’ Bucks defeated Ballinger 26-22 before falling to Comfort 40-6.

In other first-round games, Wink lost 28-19 to El Maton Tidehave, while Van Horn was edged 24-18 by Flatonia.
