The Permian boys basketball team was looking for a quick start against Lubbock Estacado.
Ben Saldivar stepped up and the Panthers never looked back.
Saldivar scored 12 points in the first quarter as Permian jumped to a comfortable lead en route to an 84-61 victory against the Matadors in nondistrict play Tuesday at the Permian Fieldhouse.
Jamibrione Anderson scored a game-high 21 points for the Panthers (7-3), with Tremayne Baty finishing with 16 and Easi Deleon chipping in 10 off the bench, all in the fourth quarter.
“We talked about getting off to a quick start,” Permian coach Steven Flores said. “Ben had a good first quarter and we got some good production off the bench tonight.”
The Panthers led 23-9 after eight minutes thanks to the hot shooting from Saldivar, who hit five jumpers in the quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Anderson and Baty assumed the bulk of the scoring in the second and third quarters, with Deleon hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lead the team.
Devoryea Boyd led the Matadors (1-4) with 16 points, with Bobby Ross chipping in 11 to the loss.
