HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bronchos dominant in bi-district victory

The Odessa High boys basketball team wanted to see if El Paso Coronado could guard Ivan Carreon in the first quarter.

The Thunderbirds couldn’t and it was quickly evident they were going to have trouble guarding anyone else on the Bronchos’ roster.

Carreon and Jordan Bruner each scored 11 points in the first quarter as Odessa High dominated, 86-53, in a Class 6A bi-district playoff game Tuesday at the OHS Fieldhouse.

Bruner finished with a game-high 24 points, with Carreon adding 20 to the mix.

Naledge Jenkins chipped in 13 and Justin Martinez finished with 10 in the victory.

All 10 players on the Bronchos’ roster scored.

The Bronchos improved to 22-13 and will face North Crowley later this week at a site to be determined.

North Crowley defeated Keller Central, 48-39, on Tuesday.

Enrique Castro scored 21 points to lead the Thunderbirds (15-15), with Aiden Diamos finishing with 12 in the loss.

Odessa High wasted no time taking control, jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead to force an early timeout by El Paso Coronado less than two minutes into the game.

The pause didn’t affect the Bronchos, who led 24-15 after one quarter.

El Paso Coronado tried to climb back into the game, pulling to within one point (34-34), with 1:50 to play in the first half.

The Bronchos then scored the last six points of the half, including Bruner’s off-balance, just-throw-it-in-the-direction-of-the-basket desperation shot that went in at the buzzer.

Odessa High then went on a 17-4 run to start the second half to break things open.

PERMIAN 66, EL PASO FRANKLIN 48

EL PASO The Panthers were slow out of the game after a five-hour bus ride but quickly hit their stride in a Class 6A bi-district victory Tuesday at El Paso Franklin.

Permian trailed, 18-12, after the first quarter, but used a 14-0 run to climb back into the contest and take control the rest of the way.

The Panthers (21-12) will face Keller High in the next round.

Keller High defeated Fort Worth Paschal, 89-46, on Tuesday.
