HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Wolfforth Frenship defeats Odessa High

The Wolfforth Frenship baseball team remains undefeated in District 2-6A.

Odessa High, on the other hand, is still searching for its first win.

The Tigers continued their undefeated start in district play with a 4-0 win over the Bronchos Thursday at Pressly Field.

Frenship, which was fresh off a series sweep over Midland Legacy, improved to 14-6-1 overall and 4-0 in district play.

Frenship pitcher Brooks Roberson played a complete game for the Tigers.

“Our pitcher did a good job,” Frenship head coach Chad Reynolds said. “He’s on the back end of the flu. He wasn’t feeling good but he went out there today and battled through it. He did a good job. Anytime you can get a performance like that on the mound, then you don’t need a whole lot of offense. We didn’t have many runs because Odessa High’s pitcher (Jayven Gonzales) did a great job.”

Odessa High, which was swept by Permian last week, now sits at 10-8, 0-4.

“Both pitchers did a great job,” Odessa High head coach Jerod Couch said. “Defensively, after the way we played last week, to play like that today was a big step. We just had a tough day in the box but you have to give credit to (Roberson). That kid is really good.”

A home run by Frenship’s Nano Mendoza was one of the few highlights of the game as both teams played a low-scoring contest for much of the game.

That is, until the sixth inning when runs by Brooks Robertson and Hudson Simpson turned a two-run lead into a four-run advantage for the Tigers.

Both defenses kept the game scoreless through the first inning.

However, the Tigers managed to load the bases in the top of the second inning with two outs.

With Kolton Christie at the plate, he ended up drawing a walk, allowing Rylan Koenig to score and give Frenship a 1-0 lead.

Odessa High managed to stop the bleeding and keep things at a one-run game.

A double play by the Bronchos kept the Tigers from adding to their lead in the third inning as Frenship could only muster one hit from the top of frame.

Odessa High managed to get a runner on second with Bo Rodriguez.

However, he was tagged out and the third inning came to an end with the Bronchos still trailing by one.

A solo home run from Frenship’s Nano Mendoza bounced off the flag pole in center field, giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage to begin the fourth inning.

A triple from Frenship’s Brady Boles in the top of the sixth put the Tiger in scoring position with no outs.

A sacrificial fly into left field from Robertson scored Boles soon after to put the Tigers ahead 3-0.

Simpson managed to advance to home, capitalizing on an OHS error as Mendoza got a double off the center field wall and the Bronchos’ deficit became 4-0.

Both teams will resume their series on April 12 in Wolfforth.

Frenship will next face Midland High on April 4 at home.

“We’re just going one game at a time, as boring as that sounds,” Reynolds said. “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We’ll show up again and try to get better.”

Odessa High will next face San Angelo Central on April 4.
