HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Fast start sends Panthers past Mustangs

MIDLAND Permian’s baseball team manufactured runs in the first inning against Andrews Saturday at Christensen Stadium.

Eight of them.

Taking advantage of walks, four hit batters, a ball stuck in the web of the pitcher’s glove and some timely hits, the Panthers were able to break out early and then hold on for a 12-7 victory against the Mustangs in the final game of the Tournament of Champions.

Permian finished the three-day event 3-1-1, while Andrews was 1-4.

Andrews led, 2-0, before the Panthers sent 13 hitters to the plate in the first inning, with Caleb Boswell scoring Permian’s first run of the inning and then being called out at the plate to end the inning after his second trip around the bases.

Permian added another run in the second inning for a 9-2 lead, but watched as the Mustangs clawed their way back into the contest.

Andrews chipped away at the deficit by scoring three times in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth to pull within two (9-7).

The Panthers answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
