GOLF: Massa brothers enjoying chance to team up in Quarter Century Partnership

If Bobby Massa is to repeat as champion at this year’s Quarter Century Partnership, then he’s going to have to do it alongside his older brother Cody Massa.

The two siblings have teamed up to compete in the Championship Flight of the 60th annual Quarter Century Partnership this week at Odessa Country Club.

Both Cody and Bobby are eager for the chance to play on the same team.

“We’re just trying to play well,” Bobby said before the first round got started on Thursday. “If we play well, then we should be somewhere near the lead at the end of each round.”

Both brothers are originally from Dallas, having attended Irving High School.

Cody is the older sibling by two years.

Bobby still resides in Dallas while Cody now lives in Scottsdale, Ariz.

While this is Bobby’s third time competing in the Quarter Century Partnership, it’s Cody’s first time golfing in the tournament.

“I’m very excited,” Cody said. “I’ve been trying to compete at this tournament for the last couple of years and finally get to this year.”

Cody knows how much his brother wants to win another title.

“There’s a little bit of pressure but I just have to do my thing and let him do his thing,” Cody said.

It might be the first time both Massa brothers are playing in the Quarter Century Partnership but it’s far from their first golf tournament they’ve played together in.

“We played the four ball qualifier last year and didn’t get in,” Cody said. “Then, we played the Arizona Golf Association Four Ball Tournament and we won in a playoff so there was a little preparation there.”

Bobby won last year’s Quarter Century Partnership alongside Jeff Murray.

During that tournament, Bobby and Murray both shot the low round in the second and third rounds which was good enough to secure the title for the duo, carding rounds of 68-62-64—194 to finish two shots ahead of Kelly Grunewald and Kevin Thornton (67-64-65—196).

It was the first Quarter Century Partnership title for both Bobby and Murray. At this year’s tournament, Murray will be competing alongside Paul Misko in the Championship Flight.

Cody spent the last couple of weeks getting as many rounds of golf in to prepare for his inaugural Quarter Century Partnership.

“I’m just trying to stay ready,” Cody said. “I’ve been practicing as much as I can.”

He’s hopeful that’ll come in handy if needed as Bobby has been busy with his newborn child.

“I just had a new born so I haven’t had much time to play,” Bobby said. “I’ve played very little in the last four weeks but we’ll see if we can put it on cruise control and let the subconscious do it for us.”

Cody got a chance to play at the Odessa Country Club for the first time on Wednesday.

“I like this course,” Cody said. “The greens are good. It’s in great shape. It’s crazy just how different both courses are.”

The first round of the Championship Flight took place on the Links Course on Thursday with the second round being held at the Old Course.

Saturday’s third and final round will be back on the Links Course.

“This side is a little more open so there’s a little more forgiveness,” Bobby said. “On the other side, you have to hit it a little straighter but we hope to keep the ball in front of us and make a few putts and play a good round.”

Regardless of the final outcome, both brothers are just happy to golf together at this tournament.

“We just always have a good time,” Bobby said. “We look forward to making memories.”
