GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Reed goes wire-to-wire at ECISD Invitational

Midland Legacy’s Sarah Reed finished the second round at 3-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors at the ECISD Invitational Saturday at Ratliff Ranch Golf Links.

Reed (71-69—140) was the only golfer to finish under par.

El Paso Coronado’s Katleyn Stubbs and Midland Legacy’s Natalia Armenta tied at 149, with Stubbs winning a playoff for second place.

Reed wasn’t completely satisfied with her performance

“That wasn’t my best coming out,” Reed said. “Last year, I had shot a 66; I’ve done it a couple of times out here, but you can never be too disappointed with two rounds in the red.”

“I had a really good front nine. I was four-under after eight (holes) and then I had a bogey on nine, and just kind of derailed me and I just never got some momentum.”

El Paso Coronado (308-303—611) won the team crown, with Midland Legacy (315-305—620) and Odessa Compass Academy (324-321—645) finishing second and third respectively.

Odessa High (378-370—748) was eighth, led by Marina Muela’s tie for ninth place (79-79—158).

Muela also felt like she could have done better, despite matching her personal best on back-to-back rounds.

“Today’s performance wasn’t as good as yesterday’s for sure,” Muela said. “Even though it’s the same score, it wasn’t as good.

“Instead of improving my score, I just evened it out,” Muela continued. “With every bogey, there was a birdie to bump up my score.”

One of the highlights of her second round was making at 1 7-foot birdie putt on No. 11, along with near ace on one of the courses four Par 3’s.

The Lady Bronchos, as a team, improved eight strokes from the opening round.

Veronica Urias showing the greatest jump with a 12-stroke improvement.

Odessa High coach Shelbye Hill could not be more proud of her team.

“I’m impressed,” Hill said. “I’m totally flabbergasted.

“I’m very proud of how they have performed. I’m very proud of how they walked out on the golf course with confidence, and they finished with that same conference that they started with. I cannot ask for more.”

Permian, in 12th after the first round, did not post a team score in the second round after one of its golfers became ill overnight.
